We’re under construction: we’re developing into something big.
Plan B in brief is an alternative queer community space by queer folks for queer folks. We’re developing our organization into a not-for-profit multi-stakeholder co-operative. We’re aiming to merge three key elements in our day-to-day operations: part resource center and people’s photocopier, part coffee shop and community event space, and part feminist sex toy store. We’re aiming to provide sliding scale printing, a community zine library, alternative education and programming, and offer items such as binders and ethical harnesses for queer bodies.
The long-term strategic goal is to develop a strong membership drive that will sustain us as an organization and enable us to develop a foundation. The foundation’s vision is to fund the unfundable; provide financial support to queer and trans folks who need to travel in between cities for doctors appointments, or even assist in legal name change processes, and even help medical coverage like hormones or surgeries for queer and trans folks.
Our community is one of the largest queer communities outside of Toronto. Even then, how do we have access to sexual health and resources that are anti-oppressive, anti-capitalist, queer centered and body positive? Especially for trans and non-binary persons; how can we access ethical, sex positive and gender affirming resources? The internet is a costly adventure and traveling to Toronto’s own “Come As You Are” is often inaccessible. We have to either purchase things online or take entire days out of our lives to get access to things. These are huge barriers. Why can’t we offer queer spaces here in Kitchener-Waterloo rather than sending our members away to other cities, spaces or communities?
There is nothing like this that exists in our community; all the more reason for our Kitchener-Waterloo community to foreground something spectacular. We aren’t here to make money. We’re here to help and support our queer community in big and vulnerable ways. The only way we can succeed is if we have your support. Your feedback. We have an ongoing community feedback survey here that’s helping shape our mission, vision and values.
It’s a dream. The few of us involved are, like many of you queer and trans folx, barely holding on because of the racist-colonialist-capitalist-ableist-classist-transphobic-hetero-patriarchy. We’re looking for folx to help get this space started. So who are we? We’re queer persons and trans folx. We’re lovers, fighters, workers, drop-outs, failures, artists, feminists, poets, researchers, complainers, survivors, and so much more. Join us in making Plan B Co-op a reality.
If you’re interested in feminist and anti-racist work organizing focusing on community support, accountability, safer spaces, anti-racism, anti-oppression, sex positivity, mental health support, and queer, trans and two-spirit spaces, look no further! Let’s get together sometime. We’ll watch Netflix and snack with a side of organizing.
A bit of recent changes:
On March 1, 2017 we moved into our new home at Treehaus, a collaborative working space located in the heart of downtown Kitchener at 79 Joseph St. Here is where we host our binder sewing workshops, clothing swaps, program meetings and event plannings, and receive all of our mail/binders.
As of April 2017, the transitional apparel company, GC2B has sponsored us in supporting our QT2SI+ Garment Drive by donating factory second binders and providing us access to place bulk binder purchases for trans folks here. This lets us all save the large cost in shipping to the Region of Waterloo. Awesome, huh?
In mid-June 2017, we’ve swapped around the internal emails and now have personalized email addresses for our core members and programs! We’re getting fancy!
In solidarity, love & rage.
